Can Agile Transformation happen in a Highly Regulated Environment?

National Health Services Blood & Transplant's Agile Journey

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is a joint England and Wales Special Health Authority. It’s responsible for the provision of a reliable, efficient supply of blood to the NHS and for matching and allocating donated organs. The organisation of 6000 people is going through a significant transformational change as core systems are replaced and IT programmes have been identified that will roll-out over the next few years. NHSBT decided to move and is in the process of moving from a waterfall environment to an agile one using the Scaled Agile Framework with coaching, consulting and training support from Ivar Jacobson International.

IJI’s expertise with agile transformation programmes was a perfect fit with what we were aiming to do. Because we’d be working with new team groupings, we wanted to assist employees with transitioning to new working relationships and processes and also address the naturally risk-averse elements. We had to stay within regulatory standards. Rapid and vast change, if not done properly, has the potential to be disruptive, and actually hinder advancement.”
